The inner city suburb of Ashgrove is only 4 km northwest of the CBD (central business district), but still retains its cosy neighbourhood ambiance. It is close to the CBD but far enough to enjoy the peace and security of a family-friendly suburb and is popular with property investors.
Ashgrove forms a corridor of older Brisbane suburbs with its neighbours Red Hill to the east and The Gap to the west. “Kallindarbin” is the native of this leafy, residential suburb. The original inhabitants were the indigenous “Turrball” or “Duke of York” clan. There are several heritage-listed sites within the suburb: Woodlands, St. John’s Wood and Glen Lyon.
It is serviced by a regular bus route. Council buses 350, 352, 372, 379, 381 and 384 (pre-paid express) run from Stewart and Waterworks roads to the CBD and back. The cross-town Great Circle Line (598/599), which connects Brisbane’s four major shopping centres, also stops at Ashgrove.
Ashgrove offers a green, leafy ambiance, thanks to its numerous parks and sporting grounds. These include Amarina Avenue Park, Ashgrove Avenue Park, Ashgrove Memorial Park, Ashgrove Quarry Park, Ashgrove Scenic Reserve, Ashgrove Sportsground Park, Banksia Avenue Park, Corbie Street Park, Corona Avenue Park, Devonshire Street Park, Dorrington Park, Enoggera Creek Reserve, Frank Waters Park, Glen Harding Park, Glen Parade Park, Greenmont Close, Jaloon Street Park, Leos Park, McCormack Avenue Park, McLean Parade, Mirrabooka Road Park, Monoplane St Park (Sunset Vista Park), Moola Road Park, Moosvale Street Park, Oakleigh Park, Park Avenue Park, Quandong Street Park, Royal Parade, Seils Park, St John’s Avenue Park, Stewart Place, T.M. Burke Park, The Esplanade Park, Tennis Avenue, The Woods Memorial Playground, Waterworks Road Park, Wilcannia Park and Woonga Drive Park.
Ashgrove is also home to the popular Broncos leagues club, where you can also grab a delicious counter meal.
The closest cinemas are Blue Room Cinebar in Paddington, Palace Centro Cinemas in Fortitude Valley and New Farm Cinemas in New Farm
There are numerous educational centres within the suburb including Mt. St. Michael’s College, Oakleigh State School, Ashgrove State School, St. Finbarr’s School, Mater Dei Catholic Primary School, St. Finbarr’s Primary School, Oakleigh Preschool and Ashgrove Preschool. The suburb is serviced by Goodstart Early Learning Ashgrove, and other childcare centres in nearby Red Hill and Kelvin Grove.
In the neighbourhood of Ithaca, there is an Institute of TAFE, where people can learn to weld and speak French.
The nearest hospitals are Montserrat Day Hospital in Brisbane, Brisbane Private Hospital and St. Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital in Wickham Terrace in Spring Hill, and Royal Children’s Hospital and The Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in Herston.
A small strip of commercial development along the suburb’s major thoroughfare, Waterworks Road, features several shopping villages, cafes and restaurants, and specialty stores, plus the odd day-spa. Coles, Aldi and Woolworths supermarkets can be found in Ashgrove.
Ashgrove is a popular Brisbane suburb for property investment. The dwelling structure in Ashgrove consists of 87.4% stand-alone houses; 9% flats, units or apartments, and small percentage of semi-detached, row or terrace/town houses. Of these dwellings, 39% are being purchased; 31% are fully owned; and 28% are being rented.
Ashgrove is known as a traditional Queensland “timber and tin” suburb, boasting plenty of elevated post-war wooden houses and colonial ages called “Queenslanders.” The suburb is also famous for another type of elevated bungalow-style Queenslander, The Ashgrovian. This homes feature numerous smaller gables and a huge staircase leading up to the verandah.
Most locals still tend to reside in stand-alone houses, despite the fact that a few boutique apartment blocks have emerged over the last few years.
