About Newmarket:

The quaint and quiet suburb of Newmarket is located about 5 km from the Brisbane central business district (CBD). Bordered by Enoggera Creek and verdant parklands, the suburbs surrounding it are Alderley, Ashgrove, Kelvin Grove and Wilston. Originally known as “The Three Mile Scrub” because of its proximity to the city, Newmarket is home to a number of heritage-listed buildings including: the Wilston House and Newmarket Air Raid Shelter.



Newmarket is has a train station and many bus lines. Newmarket Railway Station is the train station for people int his town to access regular train services on the Ferny Grove railway line if they are going to the city, Beenleigh or Ferny Grove.

There are Brisbane Transport buses going to Chermside, Mitchelton and the Brisbane CBD. The major arterials in Newmarket are Enoggera Road, the main road for motorists driving to the CBD and Alderley, and Newmarket Road, the main road to Lutwyche.



Newmarket features many good parks including Davidson Street Park, Finsbury Park, Free Street Park (Balun Park), Lanham Crescent Park, McCook Park, Nelson Place Park, Spencer Park (Holloway Field) and Wilston Recreation Reserve.

There are many walking and cycling tracks plus many social and sports clubs that people can join, including Brisbane City Football Club, Gold Crest Cricket Club, Windsor Royals Sports Club, Italo Australian Centre Club and Newmarket Bowling Club.

Newmarket is also home to the historic Newmarket Hotel, which was built in 1897. Aside from accommodation, the newly renovated hotel offers dining and gaming facilities, attracting locals most nights of the week.



There are two primary schools, Newmarket State School and St. Ambrose’s Primary School. There are also schools in the nearby suburbs of Alderley, Wilston and Ashgrove.

Locals have access to numerous childcare facilities: Newmarket House Child Care Centre, Newmarket State School Outside School Hours Care, C&K Newmarket Community Childcare Centre and Rosebery Early Learning Centre.


Hospitals and health facilities:

Locals have easy access to physicians and dentists such as Barcol Medical, Morris Medical and Newmarket 7 Day Medical Centre. The nearest hospitals are in Herston: Royal Children’s Hospital, Royal Women’s Hospital and Royal Brisbane Hospital.



Reading Newmarket Shopping Centre, which opened in 2005, features a Coles supermarket and several speciality stores.

It is a mostly residential suburb with pre-war and post-war houses, including the grand Queenslander style of homes. However, medium-density townhouses and unit blocks have emerged in recent years.
