The riverside suburb Newstead is located 3 km north of Brisbane’s central business district (CBD). It is now an up-market residential suburb, but Newstead was once an industrial area with timber yards, asbestos works, wharves and wool stores serving as its economic base. The north-west part of the suburb is mostly commercial, while the remaining portion is mainly residential. The present-day Newstead boasts of chic cafes and restaurants, upmarket studio apartments and renovated older homes.
By bus, the suburb is serviced by Brisbane Transport. By ferry, it is linked to Bulimba by a cross river ferry run by Brisbane Transport. The City Cat (catamaran ferry service) connects Newstead to the city.
Brisbane’s oldest existing home, Newstead House, is in the suburb. Constructed for pioneer Darling Downs squatter Patrick Leslie in 1846, the heritage-listed site sits on beautiful grounds overlooking the mouth of the creek. The famed Breakfast Creek Hotel, an ostentatious Victorian building, is within walking distance of Newstead House.
Spend a laid back day at Newstead Park or Perry Park and Bowen Park in Bowen Hills. Other parks in nearby areas include Vic Lucas Park and Johnson Park in Bulimba.
Moviegoers can get cinema experience at The Tivoli in Bowen Hills; and Palace Cinemas and Palace Centro Cinemas in Fortitude Valley. If you want to see live performances, your options include Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts in Fortitude Valley, and Old Museum Building and Twelfth Night Theatre in Bowen Hills.
